Doncaster Races, October 2023
As the days began to get shorter, the sun began to descend on the flat season and there would be time for one more Group One event of the 2023 Flat season to take place. The seasonal British weather would have a say on proceedings in the days leading up to the meeting. The previous weekend's Storm Babet wreaked havoc on the country and Doncaster didn't escape its grasp. The ground was waterlogged in places, but after a relatively dry week ahead of the big race, the water dissipated. An inspection of the ground situation on the morning of Friday's meeting led to the abandonment of racing with the main priority of ensuring the best possible ground for the big race. It is a bitter disappointment to all involved when a race meeting is lost to the elements and a competitive day of racing which included plenty of good racing was shelved for another year.
That would leave just one day of racing at Doncaster and it revolved around the Group One Futurity Trophy, or as it is best known as, the Racing Post Trophy. A leading source of star names of the future, the mile contest for two year olds has seen no less than six Epsom Derby winners and more recently, three English 2000 Guineas winners since 2010. The race has also become a conveyor belt for Aidan O'Brien who created racing history by winning the Futurity for the eleventh time, a record for most wins in a single Group One race. His embarrassment of riches in the race's history includes High Chapparal, St Nicholas Abbey, Camelot and last year's champion Auguste Rodin. The supporting undercard on Saturday featured more clues for the future with the race formerly known as the Doncaster Stakes, a listed race over six furlongs for two-year-olds and a valuable handicaps over a mile and a quarter and five furlongs respectively. Inspirational jockey Hayley Turner was also present at the meeting and arrived on the 998 winners mark. All hopes would be on her two rides on the card to take her to the magic 1000.
