York Races, July 2023
A traditional two day meeting which is often regarded as the jewel in York's summer racing crown, the John Smith's Cup meeting. Taking its place alongside other high class meetings at Newmarket and Ascot, this particular race day contributes to racing's so called "Super Saturday" with fantastic racing taking place up and down the country.
A meeting that receives a vibrant and healthy crowd from the local area and from further afield, the main action takes place on the Saturday with the headline act being the John Smith's Cup heritage handicap. Now entering its 64th running, the highly sought after prize has been won by many who would go on to even bigger things, both in the equine world and the jockey fraternity.
Last year's race saw the William Haggas-trained Anmaat win the contest on his seasonal debut and he has since gone onto land races at the highest level this year. A lightly raced, unexposed type is usually the key for success and there were plenty to choose from alongside battle-hardened handicappers.
Alongside the John Smiths Cup, the City Walls Stakes over 5 furlongs and Silver Cup Stakes over 1 mile and 6 furlongs helped to add quality to the card.
Day one of the meeting, the Friday, is annually headlined by the Group Three Summer Fillies' Stakes over 6 furlongs. The contest has often served useful for speedy youngsters and is also a vital asset for a potential career at stud. Last year's race was won by the classy Flotus for the team of Simon and Ed Crisford and a field of 12 lined up this year.
