"Behind The Lens"
I have been taking photographs of horse racing for the best part of twelve years now, using a SLR camera for the first time at college while studying print based media and playing around with the various settings and lenses. It wasn't long before I started to fuse my enjoyment of horse racing and curiosity for photography together and I would start to take photographs at race meetings. The first time I did this was in 2009 at the Ebor Festival at York, where Sea The Stars was the first star horse I saw in the flesh. Buying my own SLR camera at the start of 2010, I would occasionally visit Doncaster and York racecourses, taking photographs of the racing action but only as a hobby, In 2018, I started to work harder on my photography, gradually developing my work from an irregular hobby every two or three months, to something more solid and travelling to new venues and becoming more creative. In 2021, I finally decided this is something I want to take further and over the course of the last twelve months, I have been extremely lucky and honoured for racing stables to use my work for their social media posts and to be invited on stable visits. In March 2022, I noticed a feature online for the local newspaper which creates a feature for local photographers in the area to submit a questionnaire and copies of photos to be printed in the paper and online, viewed by anyone.
I took up the challenge and submitted my entry and proudly, it was featured in the local paper where my words and photos were displayed.
All amateur and budding photographers have a dream of breaking through and one day hopefully leading to a big opportunity. To see my photos displayed in a newspaper is inspiring and a reminder of how far I have come. If you have a passion, never give up on it. If you can dream it, you can do it.
The biggest of thanks to Maxine Gordon of the York Press for running the feature and including my work in The York Press.

"Behind The Lens" is a community based feature which appears in the York Press newspaper, a local newspaper which serves the York, Selby and surrounding areas. The York Press also run a "Camera Club" on Facebook which is a community page for local photographers in the York area to display their work of all subjects. The group and features are strictly non profitable and just a way of displaying the work and passions of local photographers.
