Warren Hill Gallops

A very rare occurrence on the famous Warren Hill Gallops as early risers in the town were granted access to the land to watch some of racing's biggest names in training go about their daily work.. The public event has been a huge success in recent years with the likes of Enable and Stradivarius wowing the crowds and this year the headline act was the highest rated horse in the world, Baaeed. Alongside the star names on the gallops, there was a change to the schedule and it was a chance for some of the smaller trainers in Newmarket to show off their talents. From the stable of Alice Haynes came the likes of recent listed race winning juvenile Lady Hollywood and triple winning two year old New Hope Bullet. The former jockey took out her license in mid 2021 and has made an impressive start with a useful string and was amongst those to open up the stable doors to the public later in the morning. Next up was the string from Dylan Cunha's stable, another yard to be involved with the open day. An established name in South Africa, he recently moved across to Britain where he has gained plenty of support. Amongst his showcase included Mr Fayez, the stable's first winner in Britain and Confederation, a recent purchase for new syndicate Catch Us If You Can Racing, who were keen to tempt new owners in.
In a touching tribute to Queen Elizabeth, the canter was led by a couple of horses owned by her Majesty. Educator has been off the track for a while, but had looked highly promising for trainer William Haggas while Saga came so close to providing Queen Elizabeth with one last Royal winner when narrowly beaten in the Britannia Stakes. Both work riders donned her famous silks, seen on the courses up and down the country over the decades.

BAAEED
(4-y-o)
Trainer: William Haggas. Sire: Sea The Stars, Dam: Aghareed
The best horse in Europe, based on official ratings. A brief, but explosive career to date, he didn't step onto a racecourse until June 2021 as a three year old. His spectacular performances that helped him rise though the ranks caught many an eye and a breakthrough at Group One level came in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp on just his fifth start. A dominant win over former top miler Palace Pier in the QEII Stakes on Champion Stakes whetted the appetite for more when it was announced he would stay in training in 2022. An electric return at Newbury was the start of things to come in the summer of Baaeed and his most recent waltz in the Juddmonte International solidified the comparisons to Frankel and Sea The Stars. A career which has been fast, furious but also memorable, he will leave his own mark on the sport when he retires to stud at the end of the year.
MISHRIFF (5-y-o)
Trainer: John and Thady Gosden. Sire: Make Believe, Dam: Contradict
One of the stars of 2021 and rightfully recognised as a leading horse in world racing after his exploits last year. Even before then, he was a horse of significant talent, finishing second in the Saudi Derby before returning to Europe and winning the French Derby in clearcut fashion. His bubble was deflated slightly when only eighth in the Champion Stakes but in 2021 he developed into a much stronger horse. Returning to Riyadh to win the Saudi Cup and then following up at nearby Meydan in Dubai where he took in the Dubai Sheema Classic, beating a stellar international field. Not content with that, he would compete at the highest level in Britain too with placings in the King George and Eclipse before a memorable rout in the Juddmonte International at York by six lengths. Mishriff has yet to win this year, but he has run with credit on each of his four starts this summer. A second in the Eclipse and Juddmonte along with a third in the King George and fourth in last week's Irish Champion Stakes. Brilliantly handled by the Gosden team, Mishriff has earned over £11,000,000 in prize money thanks to his middle-east exploits and will be a mainstay in international racing history as he heads off to stud at the end of the season.
NASHWA (3-y-o)
Trainer: John and Thady Gosden. Sire: Frankel, Dam: Princess Loulou.
A rising star from the Clarehaven stable and a key partner in the career of jockey Hollie Doyle. A daughter of the mighty Frankel, she finished third on her only juvenile start but as a three year old this year, she has flourished. Breaking her maiden tag in excellent style which set up a path to the Classics. Winning the Oaks Trial at Newbury made her well fancied for the Epsom showcase and a third place behind Tuesday and Emily Upjohn was very commendable. A trip to France followed for the Prix de Diane which created history as Hollie Doyle became the first female rider to win a Classic in France or Britain. A comprehensive win at Goodwood's Glorious Festival in the Nassau Stakes has gained her plenty of fans over the summer. A potential trip to America for the Breeders' Cup is on the cards.
INSPIRAL (3-y-o)
Trainer: John and Thady Gosden. Sire: Frankel, Dam: Starscope.
Just like stable companion Nashwa, this 3 year old daughter of Frankel has also made a big impression at the summer festivals this year. Attending the gallop event in last year's Open Weekend, she was already highly regarded as the best juvenile filly in the country with wins in the May Hill Stakes and Fillies' Mile. A setback forced her out of the Guineas and Oaks, but a stunning performance on her comeback reminded us all of what we had missed. Stretching clear in the Group One Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, she destroyed the winners of the seperate Guineas under Frankie Dettori, blitzing concerns of race fitness. She tasted defeat for the first time on her next start, the Falmouth Stakes, where old rival Prosperous Voyage rallied to take a shock win, but that was seemingly a blip as the real Inspiral came back on her most recent start. Taking on the colts for the first time in the French Group One the Prix Jacques Le Marois, she showed her customary turn of foot and landed a third Group One win.
ALPINISTA (5-y-o)
Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott Bt. Sire: Frankel, Dam: Alwilda.
A late bloomer who has become a fan favourite not only for the colour of her coat, but for her toughness and longevity. Always the apple of Sir Mark Prescott's eye, she looked useful at an early age, but it wasn't until her fourth and fifth year where she really blossomed. Taking in Group One events in France and Germany, she has racked up an unbeaten run of seven races, all at the highest level. A rare start in Britain for the Yorkshire Oaks meant she had to dispel some of her critics but she did that in style at York by winning again and potentially setting up a shot at Europe's biggest race, the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and potentially against Baaeed. A filly who does just about enough in her races, never winning by far but always knowing where the finish line is. She has been a credit to her patient connections.
