Newcastle Races, November 16th 2024
A week on from the climax of the turf flat season and as all eyes in the racing world were focussed on the jumping action at Cheltenham, the action on the all-weather continued to pick up pace at Newcastle with this valuable meeting on a late Saturday afternoon. In a 'New For 2024' fixture, the main highlights would be a pair of listed races that were moved from Lingfield to Newcastle this year. This gives the North-East venue a much appreciated boost to their calendar and elsewhere, competitive and well contested handicaps would provide the support act into the evening,
Race One: The BetUK Churchill Stakes - Listed Race - 1 Mile, 2 Furlongs - Runners:
The first of two good quality listed races would open the meeting with the Churchill Stakes taking place at its new home for the first time. The ten furlong listed race was a feature of Lingfield's all-weather season since the first running in 2000. The race was a happy hunting ground for former trainer Gerard Butler, who has won six runnings of the race in the mid-2000's. In recent seasons though, the calibre of winning horses has risen. In 2011, the Godolphin-owned Hunter's Light won this race before winning three Group One races around the world. Ten years late in 2021, the plucky Pyledriver picked up the prize in this race and famously went on to win the following year's King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes. Last season, Godolphin would win once again with the useful Blue Trail getting the better of Tyrrhenian Sea in an exciting finish.
The class of 2024 would be hoping to join the list of quality former winners and the race attracted some of the best in the all-weather sphere.
Race Two: The BetUK Golden Rose Stakes - Listed Race - 6 Furlongs - Runners:
The second listed race of the afternoon would also take place under a totally new guise. The six furlong contest has been long assoiciated with the sharp turns and speedy downhill descents of Lingfield since 2008, but competitors this year will face a much different test with the arrow straight track. The race is often a close contest between pattern level sprinters and high quality handicappers and has seen plenty of popular horses win this race. In 2019, Julie Camacho's popular veteran Judicial scored in this race while in 2022, David O'Meara's very tough handicapper Summerghand landed another stakes race. The only dual winner of the race would be the Lingfield specialist Good Effort, who won in 2020 and 2021. Last year, the four year old Willem Twee would get up close home to win at listed level for the first time.
This year's contest saw
Race Three: The Win £1M With BetMGM Golden Goals EBF Novice Stakes - Class Five - 2-Y-O's Only - 6 Furlongs - Runners:
After the excitement of the two listed events, the racing would return to a much familiar sight at Newcastle with a lower level novice race for juveniles over six furlongs.
Race Four: The BetUK: It's Where The UK Bets Handicap - Class Three - 5 Furlongs - Runners:
Next up would be a decent looking handicap over the minimum trip which would see a competitive field line up for the prize.
